The word cleave is a semantic enigma. At once meaning to sunder, rend or separate, untie but also to unite, lean in and support.

For about a decade, femlab was located in a small dedicated space in the garden level of Assiniboia Hall. With the move of the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, which hosts and houses the gallery, to the third floor of Assiniboia Hall, femlab has had to get creative.
Cleaves, featuring work by the artist known as Slovia, is the first of what we hope to be a series of pop-up femlab exhibitions that will be hung in the feminist hallways of Assiniboia Hall.
Using acrylic and Chiyogami paper, Edmonton based artist Slovia has created a series of bright and complex art objects that compel viewers to reflect on topics as diverse as climate change, intergenerational relationity, political violence, and social division. Slovia invites viewers to recognize the tensions that mark social divisions and to simultaneously imagine pathways toward unity, collaboration, and change. The artist draws artistic inspiration from feminist social justice theory including critical theory and intersectionality.
Equinox, pictured above, is like all of the works in this exhibition insofar as it features organic, floral, or floral-inspired forms. The complex play with colour, depth, and darkness render these works as intense reflections on social challenges. The dark colours suggest anguish, but bright sparks of light make it impossible to view these works through a lens of despair. Indeed, Slovia invites her viewers to search for balance at the same time that she shows us division and polarities.
Cleaves is the first of what we hope to be a series of pop-up femlab exhibitions that will be hung in the hallways of Assiniboia Hall.
The artworks will be on display on the walls of the south wing of Assiniboia Hall, third floor, from August 15 to October 15, 2023. An artist talk will be held September 20 at noon. All are welcome.
